Axios Feature: WSP Experts Discuss EV Fire Risk to Enclosed Transportation Structures

Hotter, longer-burning EV battery fires present new threats to parking garages and other facilities. Is the transportation industry prepared to counter them?

WSP’s William Connell and Hasan Raza help transportation clients around the country confront the risk of intense, hard-to-extinguish electric vehicle (EV) fires to infrastructure, particularly within enclosed spaces such as parking garages and maintenance facilities where multiple EVs are parked and charging.

”Fortunately, EV fires are rare, but the threat is real as transit agencies and motorists accelerate the transition to zero-emission battery powered vehicles.” Raza said.

Hasan and Bill have conducted research and authored findings on EV fire risks to tunnel infrastructure, and their work is informing delivery of transportation projects. Axios recently spoke with them about the risks of EV fires and cities’ preparedness.
