NEW YORK — WSP, a leading engineering, environment and professional services firm, is recognized as an “Ally in Action” in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT’s) National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS) to reduce serious injuries and deaths on U.S. roadways.
The NRSS outlines USDOT’s comprehensive approach to reversing the rise in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on the nation’s highways, roads and streets. WSP is the first engineering consultancy to be recognized in the NRSS’s Call to Action.
“We are proud to announce our unwavering commitment to USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy to reduce roadway fatalities,” said Andrew Ceifetz, P.E., RSP2I, vice president and director of transportation safety at WSP. “NRSS is a critical step forward toward shifting the way we all should collaborate to address safety on public highways, roads and streets to reduce serious injuries from traffic accidents nationwide and save thousands of lives.”
The NRSS recognizes that getting to zero fatalities will take efforts at all levels of government and across sectors, and this Call to Action followed USDOT’s announcement of the third round of nearly $1 billion in funding from the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program | U.S. Department of Transportation discretionary competitive grant program. SS4A funding awarded to date will improve roadway safety planning for about 70 percent of the nation’s population.
“We are honored to be part of this strategy to get people home safely after each and every trip on our nation’s roadways,” said Jennifer Pangborn, vice president in transportation at WSP. “Getting to zero roadway fatalities is at the heart of what we do and requires everyone to play a part. Our focus is to align safety from research, planning, and the Safe Systems Approach to support agencies in incorporating countermeasures and strategies into design, transportation systems management and operations, utilizing technology. We are continuing to educate and grow our staff through internal webinars and trainings on safe systems and vision zero.”
The NRSS’s Call to Action invites every organization to participate in taking part and sharing how they will actively reduce deaths and injuries on America’s roadways, expand adoption of the NRSS’s five-pronged Safe System Approach and a zero fatalities vision, and transform how we as a nation think about road safety.
