Domino Sugar Redevelopment Master Plan

Built in 1856, the Domino Sugar Refinery has dominated the waterfront of Williamsburg, Brooklyn for over 150 years. After the facility closed in 2004, the city seized the opportunity to redevelop the area for housing. WSP USA provided built ecology services for developer Two Trees’  masterplan, which was approved by the city in 2014.

Among the Largest Master Planned Developments in New York City

The six-block development includes multi-family units, commercial and retail spaces, a school, a large public park, new piers for additional waterfront open space, new city streets, and a historic objects tour geared towards educating visitors about the industrial roots of the site.

The plan also includes a large affordable housing and public use component. Great importance was placed on public use and community amenities.

Sustainable Strategy

Our built ecology team worked closely with Two Trees on their New York City Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) application. This included energy modeling and a LEED strategy for each of the five buildings included in the redevelopment.

  Given the size of the development and the plan to build in phases, our work included coordination of sustainable strategies at both the building- and community-wide scales.
