Can you describe a pivotal moment or project that significantly advanced your expertise?
One pivotal moment in my career was working on a project for MD Anderson, a premier medical facility in Houston. It was a new facility called The Pavilion, and it came at an interesting time in my career. I had mostly worked on projects for HCA Healthcare in Dallas, but this project was different. I had a week of free time before my next project started, so I helped with some drawings. What was supposed to be a week’s worth of filler work before the next assignment turned into six years of leading the design, managing the project and overseeing construction administration. It was a challenging design-build project, but it gave me the opportunity to really run and work with the client directly and hone my skills.
On a personal note, this project became even more significant when my uncle was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer six months after we finished. Despite the challenging environment of building in the Houston Medical Center, the care my uncle received at the facility we built was incredible. He lived for seven more years after his diagnosis, which really underscored the importance of what we do. Designing and building environments that provide world-class healthcare made me realize the impact of our work on the community and on people who matter to me.
