NEW YORK — WSP, a leading engineering, environment and professional services firm, attended the signing on July 9 of the $6.88 billion final federal funding grant for the historic Gateway Program centerpiece — the Hudson Tunnel project.
The funding, among the largest federal investments ever in U.S. transportation, will create thousands of new jobs and deliver significant transit and passenger rail improvements to the busy Northeast Corridor with new, modern tunnels under the Hudson River between New York City and New Jersey.
WSP is providing engineering support for the environmental impact statement and preliminary engineering design services for two new tunnels under the Hudson River with a section of viaduct in the Meadowlands connecting to the existing Northeast Corridor at Allied Interlocking.
“WSP is incredibly proud to be part of the tri-venture with STV and AECOM,” said Jerry Jannetti, senior vice president and national transportation and infrastructure leader at WSP. “Collaborating with Gateway Development Corporation, Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, state and federal representatives and a host of outstanding partners will deliver a transformational project to the Northeast region.”
The existing single-track tunnels, built over a century ago, support hundreds of train trips daily and sustained damaged during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The new two-track rail tunnel stretching between the Bergen Palisades in New Jersey to Manhattan will provide improved reliability, resiliency and redundancy for daily commuters and travelers on the Northeast Corridor.
