Reflecting its mission to promote modern and contemporary art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s new headquarters at One Liberty Plaza features a meticulously designed lighting strategy that preserves irreplaceable artwork and supports an inspired modern office environment.
From museum to workplace
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, established in 1937, has been a cornerstone in the appreciation and promotion of modern and contemporary art. Initially, the foundation was housed in the Museum of Non-Objective Painting at 24 East 54th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Yet, this early gallery space lacked the comprehensive office facilities needed for the foundation’s administrative functions.
In 1959, the foundation moved to the iconic Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue, designed by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This building, with its unique spiral design, quickly became an architectural landmark and provided a prestigious and inspiring environment for the foundation. But like the foundation’s prior space, the office spaces within the museum were limited and not specifically tailored to the foundation’s evolving needs.
