Prior to Hurricane Sandy’s landfall, WSP responded to a request from the New York City (NYC) Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) for emergency response support, coordinated by the NYC Office of Emergency Management (OEM).
Solution
Within 24 hours of the request, WSP activated an emergency response team to provide immediate support in sourcing emergency equipment and identifying expedited, cost effective solutions. Within 48 hours, WSP's team was providing 24/7 support to the Logistics Center in Brooklyn and the Logistics Staging Area at Citi Field in Queens, New York.
In addition to on- and off-site project management, WSP coordinated sourcing and transportation of 49 emergency generators and 82 light towers from 14 states on behalf of DCAS and OEM. WSP also implemented a customized, scalable operations and maintenance and light duty repair program to ensure proper operation of equipment, and initiated and oversaw 24/7 emergency fuel distribution for first responders and transportation assets at Floyd Bennet Field.
In partnership with SolaRover, a mobile solar power firm, WSP donated a mobile hybrid solar generator to provide alternative energy to support a gym, clinic and soup kitchen facility run by Greenpeace, a global environmental organization.
