Riverside Park Development and Renovation of Historic Industrial Building

The potential of human health risks had to be properly investigated, remedied and results communicated to the stakeholders during the renovation and redevelopment of a former industrial area that has been rejuvenated  into a thrilling and sought after area in Washington D.C.

Waterfront Revitalization

The Yards Park is a 5.4-acre world-class public waterfront park overlooking the Anacostia River. The park and the renovation of the Lumber Shed into office and commercial use is a key component of The Yards project, which is developing a dynamic urban neighborhood spanning 42 acres along the Anacostia Waterfront.

Collaborative Approach

WSP assisted Forest City Washington and the General Services Administration (GSA) with all facets of investigating and remediating contaminated soil and groundwater during development of a 5-acre waterfront park on a portion of the former Washington Navy Yard along the Anacostia River. Our team also identified and oversaw the abatement of hazardous building materials during renovation of the historic ‘Lumber Shed’ building in accordance with EPA and District of Columbia requirements.

We obtained approval to conduct remediation during park construction, thereby reducing project costs and mitigating the chance of project delays. For the removal of hazardous building materials, we developed a work plan detailing the procedures and provided daily monitoring of the work. A key component of the project was incorporating the abatement with general renovation to meet project completion timeline.
