MIAMI — An innovative diverging diamond interchange along Interstate 95 in Florida’s Palm Beach County has been recognized as one of the year’s most impactful projects by Roads&Bridges on its 2024 Top 10 Roads list.
It was one of three road projects honored this year by Roads&Bridges where WSP played a key role in its design and construction.
The existing interchange at Glades Road struggled to accommodate the daily flow of traffic, which by 2013 had reached 200,000 vehicles per day. With rapid population growth continuing and more than 300,000 vehicles a day anticipated by 2040, Florida Department of Transportation District 4 took consequential action, and selected the team of WSP and Prince Contracting to design and construct a new interchange.
In addition to converting the interchange from a partial clover leaf to a DDI, improvements along Glades Road included: widening two bridges over I-95 and one over Military Trail/South Florida Rail Corridor, building a new pedestrian bridge over I-95 and providing roadway widening, drainage, lighting, signalization, and intelligent transportation systems construction.
“With a ‘one team, one job’ approach, the I-95/Glades Road Diverging Diamond Interchange Project is a testament to innovative engineering and strategic planning, while enhancing safety and mobility for all,” said Yamila Hernandez, WSP senior vice president and project manager.
