The Resilient Environments Changemaker

Doug McFarling's 30-year journey turning environmental challenges into opportunities for resilience began with a transformative semester backpacking through the wild and rugged landscapes of the southwestern U.S., and became a career committed to creating a sustainable future for communities around the globe.

Across our divisions we're doing so much to help infrastructure and communities be more resilient. So, while the role that I play personally is just one part of the solution, it's gratifying when it all comes together, and I get to witness that kind of positive, lasting change.

The programmatic EA WSP completed for the BLM in California, showing the hazardous vegetation (dead and dying trees), helped communities manage and reduce their exposure and risk to wildfires.

I've also really enjoyed the arc of my career, which has involved working with multiple agencies around the world with a broad geographic footprint of responsibilities. My project roles have provided opportunities for travel and work in fascinating and beautiful places like Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico and even Japan.
