NEW YORK — Further cementing its position as a trusted leader in the tunneling market, WSP ranked fourth for the second consecutive year on Trenchless Technology magazine’s 2024 list of the Top 50 engineering firms in North America.
The ranking is compiled from revenue and project data submitted by engineering companies from 2023. During that year, WSP’s trenchless technology revenue was $122 million, up from $119 million the previous year.
“Keeping our fourth-place ranking demonstrates the importance WSP places on this rapidly expanding sector of the utility industry,” said Everett Litton, PE, national practice lead and senior technical principal for trenchless technology at WSP in the U.S. “We are proud of the skill and innovation we bring to every project, and grateful that our clients continue to trust and value our design and construction services to help build-out their pipelines and critical networks.”
WSP’s presence in the trenchless technology industry has been on the rise in recent years, ranking fifth in 2022 — a sharp increase from the firm’s 14th place rank in 2021.
Trenchless technology covers a variety of construction techniques used to install or rehabilitate underground infrastructure — primarily pipelines — that allows for minimal disruption to surface traffic, businesses, residents and the environment. It is devoted to smaller diameter underground tunneling technologies, including horizontal directional drilling, microtunneling, sliplining and horizontal auger boring, among other technologies.
Trenchless technology emerged in the late 1970s and has been gaining in popularity and new methods ever since. Primary market sectors using the technology include drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, oil and gas, electrical, fiber optic and offshore wind.
Recent WSP-designed trenchless tunneling projects include: The Lower Meramec Tunnel in St. Louis, a sanitary sewer tunnel and the longest bored tunnel in Missouri history; two offsite gravity drainage storm sewers for Indiana’s State Road (SR) 37 Improvements Project, a curved microtunnel that won Trenchless Technology’s 2020 Project of the Year; several one-pass sanitary sewer tunnels for Charlotte Water, Sanders Utility Construction Company and Bradshaw Construction Corporation in North Carolina to create a 3,587-foot long, 48-inch diameter reinforced concrete utility pipe in variable subsurface conditions.
Today, there are hundreds of variants of trenchless technology techniques for new installations and rehabilitations.
