WSP USA was a key partner in the award winning project team responsible for transforming part of the historic former 1.2-mllion-square-foot St. Elizabeths Campus into the new United States Coast Guard Headquarters located in Washington D.C.

Revitalizing and Restoring a Containment Site

This historic brownfield site suffered from historical ash fill and contaminated soil and required the environmental issues to be addressed in addition to construction workers health and safety concerns. Environmental pre-characterization provided the development team with the necessary information and tools to properly handle and dispose of impacted materials. The data also identified unique health and safety challenges which WSP addressed through site specific training for construction activities. Our team employed the latest technology to provide real-time data which avoided construction delays and assisted with soil and ash segregation.

A Complex Excavation and Redevelopment Project

WSP oversaw the removal of more than 1 million tons of soil, including 600,000 tons of ash and contaminated soil in less than 10 months. During the process our work was inspected by four different regulatory agencies, with good results each time. Following the excavation, we provided materials assessment and hazardous materials awareness training to the construction team and its sub-contractors.
