Enhancing Access and Connectivity to Western Sydney
WSP has played a key role in developing a new underground motorway interchange to link the new M4 Motorway at Haberfield to the New M5 Motorway at St Peters, with additional connections to the Iron Cove Bridge and Rozelle Interchange.
Transport for NSW’s Rozelle Interchange project is one of the most complex infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Australia. The final stage of the WestConnex program is set to improve motorway access and connections to Western Sydney and key employment hubs across the city including the Sydney Airport and Port Botany.
The Rozelle Interchange provides a new underground motorway interchange to City West Link and anunderground bypass of Victoria Road between the Iron Cove Bridge and the ANZAC Bridge, with links to the future Western Harbour Tunnel. Located at the site of the old Rozelle Rail Yards, the interchange in Rozelle is mostly underground. In turn, this creates new active transport options in Rozelle and over nine hectares of new open space.
WSP has been engaged on two separate packages of project works – A Design Joint Venture Civil/Structures Design, and the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP).
The Civil/Structures works package includes geometric design of:
-
four layers of road tunnels with numerous entry and exit ramps
-
six large ventilation tunnels
-
three major intersections at City West Link and Victoria Road
-
eleven road and pedestrian bridges
-
four significant cut-and-cover structures
-
major retaining walls
-
active transport provisions
-
a ventilation facility building
-
provisions for future adjoining projects and numerous service relocations.
The M&E works package includes the design of:
-
the tunnel ventilation system
-
HV and LV electrical systems
-
tunnel mechanical and drainage systems
-
tunnel communications systems as well as building services for the ventilation and maintenance buildings.
Delivering effective solutions
The new motorway provides crucial support for Sydney’s long-term economic and population growth by easing congestion, creating jobs and connecting communities.
The design solution delivers community space, new open space for locals, a green link between Bicentennial Park and Easton Park, better cycling links, and improved pedestrian connectivity to public transport including the light rail, and the future Sydney Metro West connecting the suburbs of Lilyfield, Rozelle, Annandale and Glebe, and providing better connections to The Bays Precinct.
