This would further strengthen domestic electricity markets and providing carbon neutral electricity to attract new energy-intensive industries.
The Eyre Peninsula Gateway™, will be the first, export-oriented green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing facility in Australia, utilising 100% renewable energy from solar and wind developments in South Australia. The project is one of the leading green hydrogen developments globally within the scope of the European Commission-funded Hydrogen Valleys program under the Clean Energy Ministerial’s global Mission Innovation initiative.
H2U appointed WSP under a Master Services Agreement, to support the project development for the initial, A$240m Demonstrator Stage of the Eyre Peninsula Gateway™ project. WSP is providing a range of specialist environmental, planning and technical services to implement the project.
Dr Attilio Pigneri, Founder and CEO of H2U commented “Having completed the initial design stages of the environmental and planning approvals processes the crucial initial studies are now underway. The detailed environmental and planning studies for the project’s production site is the critical first step towards ensuring a world class production and export project that maximises environmental protection both in production but also in the global decarbonisation of energy.”
These environmental and planning studies will investigate the potential environmental, social, planning and development impacts and define the paths to minimise or mitigate any potential impacts and improve the environmental and development outcomes.
“The initiation of these marks an important milestone for our project as well as for an entire industry, adds Dr Pigneri. “The Eyre Peninsula Gateway™ is the first green hydrogen and ammonia project of this scale globally to have transitioned into the implementation stages. H2U will work with WSP and our key engineering and technology partners, to finalise the environmental and development approvals for construction early in 2022.”
Nick Flanagan, WSP’s General Manager, Mining & Energy says, “We are excited about developing this key strategic relationship with H2U and the opportunity to work on this landmark project to support the economy of the Upper Spencer Gulf region.
The recent acquisition of Golder by WSP globally, also provides a deeper layer of capability and capacity which we can apply to this project.”
