Connectivity, automation, shared use and electric propulsion are reshaping transport networks, systems and modes of mobility. Achieving the best outcomes requires business models that support people’s changing expectations and advance the development of sustainable communities.

WSP has been exploring the potential offered by New Mobility and the associated challenges in bringing New Mobility to communities since producing New Mobility Now in 2017. New Mobility Now 2.0 and New Mobility Next, both published in 2023, advance this process by considering key questions of interest to stakeholders who plan and design mobility solutions and the operators who deliver them.

This reframing of mobility places the customer at the heart of a changing mobility landscape with digitalization and decarbonization guiding decision-making.

Mobility systems are complex, with multiple interfaces, causal links and interdependencies; a change to one element can have far-reaching consequences around and within the system itself.

The drive to achieve net zero has led to a growing shift to electric vehicles around the world and encouragement for more active travel and use of public transport. Environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices are gaining ground, reflecting progress to embrace equity in policies and actions by governments and organizations. These factors support the need to address change from a whole-system point of view.
